Representative Brad Wenstrup welcomed President Obama’s decision to consult Congress before committing U.S. military assets in Syria. An Iraq war veteran, Wenstrup says he is carefully weighing possible action by the U.S. military and potential outcomes.

“I am glad the President has decided to consult with Congress on the use of military force in Syria. Before possibly committing the U.S. military to action in Syria, we must ensure that our military objectives are clearly outlined and attainable. I have concerns of unintended consequences surrounding possible strikes, from empowering Al Qaeda-linked rebels to impacts on our allies in the region,” Wenstrup said.

  Wenstrup spent the weekend on calls with the White House and the House Armed Services Committee, receiving updates and gathering further information surrounding events in Syria and possible responses. When he returns to Washington, Wenstrup will participate in classified briefings on Syria and potential military action.

“In the coming days, I will be listening to my constituents’ concerns as well as evaluating the facts surrounding the use of our military in Syria,” Wenstrup continued. “Sending our military into action is one of the most important actions I can take as a U.S. Representative, and I take that duty seriously. I look forward to further evaluating the situation in order to make an informed vote next week.”

Congress is expected to vote on a resolution regarding Syria the week of September 9^th. Representative Wenstrup is a member of the House Armed Services and the Veterans Affairs Committees. He is currently a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and served in Iraq as a combat surgeon from 2005 to 2006.
