Wenstrup Statement on Flood Insurance

Washington, July 25, 2018 | Ann Tumolo (202-225-3164)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) released the following statement after voting against S. 1182, National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act:

This past November, I supported The 21st Century Flood Reform Act, which would reauthorize the NIFP for five years and make important, needed reforms to the insolvent program. Sadly, the Senate has failed to act, and thus we find ourselves voting to kick the can down the road for a seventh time in the past year, while the financial integrity of the NFIP continues to degrade.

"I voted no on this most recent extension to simply extend the program without any reform, knowing that a temporary lapse in the program would not impact current policy holders. I share the sentiments of my colleague Chairman Jeb Hensarling when he says 'I cannot in good conscience look another flood victim in the eye this summer and tell them a reform-less date change was the best Congress could do.' I continue to urge the Senate to pass much-needed and sensible reforms to the NFIP, so we can break this cycle of piecemeal extensions without structural improvements,” said Congressman Brad Wenstrup.
