Bipartisan Letter to CMS Urging Additional Time on Proposed Evaluation and Management Code Changes

Washington, September 11, 2018 | Ann Tumolo ((202)-225-3164)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representatives Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), Doris Matsui (D-CA), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) sent a bipartisan letter of 90 Members of the House of Representatives to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) urging the agency to further consider the recently proposed rule for the Medicare 2019 Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) that would consolidate existing evaluation and management (E/M) codes payment rates.

The Members of the House of Representatives wrote,

“We appreciate and commend the good intentions behind this proposal, to reduce paperwork and administrative burden, we urge the agency to take additional time to work closely with physicians and other stakeholders to identify alternative approaches that would accomplish CMS’ goals while ensuring that physicians are reimbursed appropriately according to the level of care required by each individual patient’s condition.

After sending the letter, the Representative Wenstrup released the following statement:

“I applaud CMS’s efforts to reduce the administrative burden on health care providers, and want to make sure we get it right as we take concrete steps in that direction. By taking additional time, and working with physicians, CMS can be most effective in reducing the crushing paperwork experienced by doctors while ensuring patients get the care they need.” said Congressman Brad Wenstrup.
