Wenstrup Applauds Demonstration Project Return to Pike County

Washington, June 4, 2019 | Ann Tumolo (202-225-3164)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) released the following statement after the Department of Energy finalized a $115 million contract to a Centrus Energy subsidiary to demonstrate the production of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU):

“As a member of the military, I know that the safety and stability of our nation stem from self-reliance and the internal capabilities of our nation, including a fully domestic enrichment capability. I fought for funding for this contract because I know that no workforce is better suited for the challenge of safely supplying our nation’s enriched uranium needs. This demonstration project, and the important jobs it will bring back to Pike County, is great news,” said Congressman Brad Wenstrup.

Background:

  • Piketon will be the only domestically owned uranium enrichment facility in the United States. The only operating enrichment facility in America is a foreign-owned plant in New Mexico.
  • HALEU is an important fuel for the advanced reactors of the future and for national security applications.
  • An early iteration of this project, the American Centrifuge Plant, was successfully operating in Piketon until the Obama administration ended the project in 2015.
