Wenstrup Statement on State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) issued the following statement after President Trump delivered his third State of the Union Address:

“President Trump delivered a powerful address tonight, outlining the many things we have achieved on behalf of the American people and providing a bold vision for the future.

"After years of recession and economic stagnation, our nation is once again experiencing prosperity in what can rightly be called a ‘Great American Comeback.’ Americans now enjoy the strongest economy we have had in the last 50 years.

"With the momentum built upon last Congress’s tax cuts, we have recently passed modernized trade deals, including the USMCA and China Phase One Agreement. Ohio farmers – true patriots who patiently endured the negotiation process – are among those who stand to benefit greatly.

“On the opioid epidemic front, I am glad to see some of the legislation we have passed, such as the bipartisan Compressive Addiction and Recovery Act and SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, help solve problems and save lives. My guest at tonight’s address was Tom Fallon, who serves as the Commander of the Hamilton County Heroin Task Force. Overdose deaths have fallen for the first time in decades because of the hard work from people like Tom.

"The President shared the stories of many inspiring Americans, including Cincinnati’s own Tony Rankins; an Army veteran who fell on tough times due to a drug addiction, but was able to find work in one of the opportunity zones created under the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. Tony is proof that our pro-growth policies are giving individuals right here in Ohio a hand up and a second chance at the American Dream.

"I was also encouraged by the President’s special attention paid to the brave men and women serving our country. It takes great courage and selflessness to voluntarily put on the uniform and deploy to dangerous parts of the world. We must do all we can to support our military members and their families. The President is living up to his commitment to rebuild the military, and the more we increase our readiness, the safer and better-equipped our servicemembers will be.

"Looking forward, I am excited to get back to work finding solutions for the American people. In particular, I am eager to tackle issues surrounding the cost and quality of health care, such as surprise medical billing.

"Ohioans have a lot to be optimistic about, and I will continue fighting for them in Washington.”
