WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) issued the following statement after voting against the House Democrats’ police reform legislation:
“Although both parties agree on most aspects of police reform, House Democrats refused to consult Republicans in crafting their legislation or allow us the opportunity to offer amendments. Worse, their bill would nationalize federal government power over local law enforcement and would prevent police officers from safely and effectively protecting our communities,” said Congressman Wenstrup. “I fear that some of my colleagues would rather keep this a political issue than pass a law with meaningful impact, as we saw yesterday when Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refused even to allow the Senate to debate the JUSTICE Act, which I’ve co-sponsored. Accomplishing needed police reform will require bipartisan cooperation, and I urge my colleagues to reconsider their priorities and work together for each and every American.”
Congressman Wenstrup is an original cosponsor of the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere (JUSTICE) Act, introduced by Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Rep. Pete Stauber (MN-08).
