Dual Service Recognition Day

Representative Terry Johnson, and USMC SGT Chris Cravens

Many of our nation's veterans have worn more than one uniform in service to our country. To coincide with Veterans Day and the Marine Corps' birthday, I introduced a resolution (H. Res. 516)  in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and honor those veterans who now serve as first responders and law enforcement officials in their communities. Known as Dual Service Recognition Day, this initiative mirrors a similar effort, sponsored by State Representative Terry Johnson, that passed in the Ohio legislature.

On Tuesday, November 10th, Representative Johnson and I hosted ceremonies across southern Ohio to honor these individuals who are twice the servant.

A Plea for Peace in the Middle East
House passes resolution condemning Palestinian attacks on Israel
Terrorism is on the rise, and deadly violence and targeted attacks are plaguing Israel and Jerusalem specifically. Shootings, stabbings, and other attacks have become near daily occurrences in the region.

In response, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution "expressing concern over anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incitement within the Palestinian Authority," (H. Res. 293) which I supported. This bipartisan resolution condemns these recent attacks, as well as the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic propaganda within the Palestinian National Authority, and calls on Palestinian officials to work towards a peaceful solution with Israel.

 Veterans Day
I’ve witnessed firsthand the courage and sacrifice displayed by our troops; their service can never be taken for granted. This Veterans Day, I joined St. Andrew Parish, Anderson High School, the Mohawk Honor Roll, and Mt. Washington Legion 484 to thank and honor those who served and remember that we are the Land of the Free because of the Brave.

Long-Term Outlook for Transportation
The House of Representatives passed a long-term highway bill this month for the nation's roadways - without any tax increases. We considered over 200 amendments, and overwhelmingly passed a version of the bill that gives states and localities greater flexibility and works to speed up the completion of projects.

Some of our major infrastructure projects take years to complete, and long term certainty from Congress will help fix our roads. The legislation now heads to a joint Conference Committee with the Senate to negotiate and reconcile differences. While I did support the House's version of the bill, I did not vote to send this bill to the joint Conference Committee because of significant concerns that the Senate will include provisions unrelated to transportation issues.
Fighting for Our Troops
WATCH: I spoke on the House floor in support of our troops and the NDAA
When I served in Iraq from 2005-2006, my fellow soldiers and I never had to wonder if the president had our backs. We knew that he was behind us.

Last month, President Obama vetoed the bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual defense bill that gives our military a plan and our troops and their families the certainty they need in an increasingly dangerous world. Republicans and Democrats agree - we must pass this bill, despite the president's opposition. It's time for President Obama to sign this bill.

Reagan National Defense Forum
Last week, I attended the annual Reagan National Defense Forum. Every year, Members of Congress, military leaders & civilian officials, private defense groups, and the general public come together to discuss innovative ways to deal with the national security challenges we face. This year, we shared ideas about handling emerging cybersecurity threats, ISIS and other terrorist organizations, and Iran, with the goal of fostering President Reagan's ideal of "peace through strength."
