Congress: Do Your Job
For the last several years, Congress has made a habit of passing massive, last-minute spending packages that don't reflect the American people's priorities. These "omnibus" bills, as they are known, represent a serious breakdown in the regular budget process. Normally, Congress is supposed to vote on twelve separate spending bills, known as appropriations bills, ranging from Defense to Agriculture to Education. However, we have shirked this responsibility time and time again without any consequences.

If we don’t fulfill the responsibilities of our office, we shouldn’t get paid. That may require some tough votes. The Senate had voted on only two of sixty appropriations bills in the last five years. A 3% participation rate in the Senate is unacceptable – that’s not even worthy of a participation trophy, let alone a paycheck.

That's why I introduced the
Do Your Job Act (H.R. 4486), which would require both the House and the Senate to vote on all twelve of the appropriations bills by the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. If either chamber fails to do so, members of that chamber will not be paid.

The American people deserve a functioning and accountable Congress that votes well before deadlines, and provides opportunities for open, transparent, and thoughtful debate on how the government spends taxpayer dollars.

"The man's story summed up the main message of the forum - don't give up on people facing addiction and/or dependency problems. They need help, whether its treatment, medication to help them get off drugs or save their lives, love, compassion, or the word of God."

Public Forum: Confronting Opiate Addiction

As southern Ohio knows too well, opiate addiction is destroying lives and devastating our communities. Earlier this month I joined Attorney General Mike DeWine's Heroin Task Force in Hillsboro for a public forum to discuss solutions to opioid addiction in our communities.

The solutions are coming from our communities facing this struggle every day, and the federal government needs to work to remove federal roadblocks that hinder the ability to respond effectively.

As a member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and chairman of the Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, much of my work in Congress focuses on opening opportunities for veterans to transition smoothly into civilian life and find employment.

Ohio employers have a strong record of hiring veterans, and we are taking this opportunity to learn their best practices. We're not just talking about hiring veterans though; following the hearing, I am hosting a Veterans' Job Fair so veterans can connect directly with employers.
