Our National Security is
in a State of Decline

Four years ago, we were confidently told "Al-Qaeda is on the run." Seal Team Six successfully eliminated Osama Bin Laden, and President Obama was trumpeting the end of the War in Iraq and the drawdown in Afghanistan.

What a difference four years makes. Our troop presence is growing in Iraq to beat back a new terrorist threat. The Taliban is seizing land in Afghanistan and withdrawals have correctly been halted. Terror has again reached the shores of Europe, and America.

Do you feel safer?

With the New Year comes a renewed commitment in Congress to advance the conservative priorities the American people want and deserve. In the first two weeks of 2016, the House has passed a variety of bills including:
  • Restoring Americans' Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act (H.R. 3762): Would repeal ObamaCare and redirect federal funding for Planned Parenthood to Community Health Centers, reducing our deficit by more than $500 billion. President Obama vetoed this bill, but the House plans to vote to override this veto on January 26.
  • North Korea Sanctions Enforcement Act of 2015(H.R. 757): Bolsters existing sanctions against North Korea in light of recent claims of nuclear weapons tests.
  • SCRUB Act (H.R. 1155): Establishes a commission whose sole purpose is to identify and recommend to Congress unnecessary and/or ineffective federal regulations that should be repealed.

For more details on the House's latest activity, check out the Majority Leader's daily and weekly schedules.

Recapping the State of the Union
President Obama delivered his final State of the Union address on Jan. 12.

On January 12, we heard from a President who is trying to project and protect his legacy of the last seven years. It's a legacy of retreating American leadership around the world and a deteriorating American Dream here at home. The incomes of Ohio workers and families are flat. Americans don't feel safer than they did seven years ago.

The House of Representatives will continue to offer solutions for the American people that address these pressing issues and right the misdirection of the last seven years. We will move legislation to protect Americans by securing our borders and safely managing our entry programs, to unleash our economic growth by lifting government red tape, and to rebuild trust with the American people.

Building U.S. Leadership
During the last week of December, I traveled with colleagues from the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, including Senators Tom Cotton and Ben Sasse, to Thailand and Burma as part of continuing discussions on security cooperation and regional stability. We also stopped over at Yokota Air Base in Japan, sitting down with U.S. military leadership for an update and thanking the troops stationed abroad.

Veterans' Job Fair and Hearing
As a member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, one of my highest priorities is working to better help our returning veterans transition to civilian life.

On Friday, February 19, I'm hosting a series of events with local veterans and businesses to examine some best practices when veteran hiring.

The day will begin at the Anderson Center in Cincinnati at 10am with a field hearing on veteran hiring, hosted by the House VA Committee's Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity.

A veterans' job fair will follow at the Anderson Center from 12pm - 2pm.
