Ensuring a Strong Defense
Last Wednesday, after 16 hours and dozens of amendments, the House Armed Services Committee passed the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with a bipartisan vote of 60-2. This is the 55th year in a row that Republicans and Democrats have bridged their differences to fulfill one of Congress' most basic duties: to provide for the common defense of our nation.

While passing a robust NDAA every year is important, now it may be more important than ever.

In a world of increasing threats, we keep asking our military to do more with less, putting them and our national security at a heightened risk. We have to ensure that our military has all the resources they need to be strong, agile, and ready for anything that comes their way.

Here's a look at some of the legislation the House passed earlier this month to bring more accountability and transparency to the IRS. These bills will now head to the Senate for consideration:
 The House also passed:
  • Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699) - Would update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) to more adequately protect consumer privacy while meeting law enforcement needs.
  • H.J.Res. 88 - Would block the Department of Labor's new "fiduciary rule", a rule that imposes more stringent regulations on financial advisors, potentially restricting access to financial planning for many Americans.
Speaking Up for Piketon
I recently joined fellow Members of the House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus to talk to Department of Energy officials about the importance of cleaning up the Piketon site and revitalizing the surrounding community.

Since I came to Congress in 2013, I have made the Piketon facility a priority. My office has worked with the Department of Energy, the Ohio Delegation, local stakeholders and the Piketon site contractors to ensure these projects receive the robust funding they need. I believe this site has incredible potential for future redevelopment, and I will continue to lead efforts for a successful cleanup process.

Honoring Those Who Have Served

Last week, I met up with some local veterans traveling with Honor Flight Tristate in our nation's capital. While here in Washington, D.C., they visited the World War II Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. Meeting these brave men and women is always such an honor!

Visiting D.C.
Thank you to the Lynchburg-Clay High School senior class for stopping by the Capitol on your trip to Washington, D.C.!

If you would like me to visit with your school (at home or in Washington, D.C.), tweet me at

Welcoming New Citizens
I recently had the honor to speak at a naturalization ceremony hosted by Deer Park High School, where 69 people from 32 countries took the oath of citizenship and pledged allegiance to the United States.

I challenged all of our new citizens to actively participate in the democratic process and get involved in public service.

We welcome all of you to the American family!
