Combating the
Opioid Epidemic

The opioid epidemic is running rampant in communities across the United States, but as we know, it has hit southern Ohio particularly hard. In 2014 alone, over 400 Ohioans right here in the Second District died of unintentional drug overdoses.

These aren't just numbers. These are moms and dads, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. They're neighbors, friends, co-workers, and students from all backgrounds.

And their drug dependency is robbing them of life.

This past week, I joined my colleagues in the People's House to battle the drug epidemic from multiple angles. You can read more about a few of those bills below, and you can see the entire list of the bills we voted on here.

WATCH: My thoughts on the opioid epidemic

Last week, the House passed over a dozen bills to confront the drug epidemic on several fronts. Here are just a few of the bills that passed with my support:
  • H.R. 4641 - Would create a task force comprised of healthcare professionals, federal agencies, and addiction experts to review and update best practices on pain management for physicians across the country.
  • Jason Simcakoski PROMISE Act (H.R. 4063) - Would require anyone who prescribes opioids at VA hospitals to receive standard training in pain management and safe prescribing practices. This bill would also direct the VA and Department of Defense to update their Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain.

A Victory for the Constitution

The Constitution scored a huge win this week!

You may recall that in July 2014, the House voted to sue the Obama Administration for spending millions of taxpayer dollars on reimbursements to insurers under Obamacare, without the necessary appropriation from Congress. In court, the House argued that the FY2014 Omnibus spending bill, which President Obama signed into law, made no appropriations for this section of Obamacare, yet the Administration chose to spend those dollars anyway.

On Thursday, a federal judge ruled in favor of the House, saying that the Administration's actions were a direct violation of the Constitution.

Time and again, the president has ignored the law of the land and overstepped his authority, infringing on Congress' Article I powers and ignoring "We the People." I'm glad to see the federal court defend the Constitution's separation of powers.

You can read more about the decision here.

National Police Week
This coming week is National Police Week, so I want to take a moment to recognize all of our men and women in blue who work tirelessly 24/7 to keep us safe. Thank you for your service!

Last week in the House, we passed several bills that aim to keep our law enforcement officers safe while giving them the tools they need to protect and defend our communities. Among other things, these bills would allow officers to carry their government-issued firearms during covered furloughs, extend the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Program, and improve law enforcement's ability to locate and recover missing children in the U.S.

Shop Small!
Earlier this month we celebrated Small Business Week, a time to recognize the small businesses across our country that employ about 1/3 of American workers. During that week, I stopped by Schlegel's Coffee House in Chillicothe to chat with owner Liz Corzine and the Chillicothe-Ross Chamber of Commerce about the things Congress can do to help small businesses grow and thrive. I even put my coffee-making skills to the test and helped serve some customers!

You can read more about my visit to Schlegel's and my vision for small businesses here in The Chillicothe Gazette.
