Defending the First Amendment

Following the Supreme Court's recent decision on same sex marriage, House Republicans are taking steps to protect the religious liberty of all Americans, including those who believe in traditional marriage.

I joined together with dozens of my colleagues to cosponsor the First Amendment Defense Act (H.R. 2802), legislation that would prevent the federal government from discriminating against any individual or group who believes that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

Americans have a constitutional right to live out their religious or moral beliefs without fear of discrimination. This right is at the core of our Republic, and I am committed to defending it in Congress.

House and Senate unanimously pass H.R. 91, Veterans ID Card Act
H.R. 91, the Veterans Identification Card Act
One of the biggest frustrations I hear from veterans across the Second District is the lack of a standard veteran identification card. Under current law, if you are not eligible to receive a VA-issued ID card, your DD-214 form is the only way to prove your veteran status. But this document contains highly sensitive information, and carrying it around puts our veterans at great risk for identify theft.

That's why I supported H.R. 91, the Veterans Identification Card Act, a bipartisan bill that allows all veterans to receive ID cards through the VA at no cost to taxpayers. The bill passed both the House and the Senate unanimously, and now awaits the President's signature.

This bill would increase access to care for millions of veterans by moving podiatrists into the Physician and Dentist pay schedules, enabling the VA to better recruit and retain experienced podiatrists.

Around the Second District
During Congress' last District Work Period, I made stops in Hamilton County, Scioto County, and everywhere in between. Take a look at some of the places and people I visited across Ohio's Second District.

Chatting with Matt Hilderbrand at C103

Sat down with Matt Hilderbrand at C103 radio station in West Union to talk about the recent Supreme Court decisions, reforming the VA, and the upcoming 2015 All-Star Game.

Met with team members at People Working Cooperatively (PWC), a non-profit organization that has helped thousands of low-income, elderly, and disabled people repair and maintain their homes so they can continue living independently. I have worked with PWC in the past to build wheelchair ramps for veterans in the 2nd District.
   Recognizing a Redleg
Ahead of the All-Star game this week, I recognized former Cincinnati Reds baseball player Charles "Chuck" Harmon on the House floor. Harmon was the first African American to play for the Reds and inspired other players to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball.
