A Look Back at
Ohio's Presidential History |
Friend -
Tomorrow, America's 58th Inaugural Ceremony will take place. Our tradition of a peaceful transition of power has lasted 220 years, dating back to 1797, when John Adams succeeded our first president, George Washington.
The great state of Ohio has played an important and prominent role throughout the history of the American presidency. Eight Presidents of the United States who served and helped shape this great nation were from the state we call home.
As we gear up for Inauguration Day, let's take a look back at these Ohioans' inaugurations in pictures:

William Henry Harrison
William Henry Harrison was sworn in as the 9th President of the United States on March 4, 1841. Although Harrison was born in Virginia, he served as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Ohio and settled in North Bend, Ohio, with his family after the War of 1812. Harrison served the shortest term in presidential history - 30 days, 12 hours, and 30 minutes. |

Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was sworn in as the 18th President of the United States on March 4, 1869. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, but later moved to the village of Georgetown in Brown County - right here in Ohio's Second District! Before becoming president, Grant was the 6th Commanding General of the United States Army.
Tip: If you're in D.C. for Inauguration Day, be sure to check out the Ulysses S. Grant statue behind the Capitol!

Rutherford B. Hayes
Rutherford B. Hayes was sworn in as the 19th President of the United States on March 4, 1877. Hayes may not be the most well-known American president, but he had a long history of service in our state. Before he was elected president, he was city solicitor of Cincinnati from 1858-1861, an officer in the Union Army, a U.S. Congressman (representing Ohio's Second District!) and Governor of Ohio. |

James Garfield
The only president to ever have been a preacher, James A. Garfield was sworn in as the 20th President of the United States on March 4, 1881 - that makes three presidents from Ohio in a row! He was also the last of seven presidents who were born in log cabins. Unfortunately, James Garfield only served as president for 6 months. He was the second of four presidents to be assassinated. |

Benjamin Harrison
A born and raised Ohioan, Benjamin Harrison was sworn in as the 23rd President of the United States on March 4, 1889. Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio, and attended Miami University in Oxford with his wife, Caroline. Before becoming president, Harrison served as a U.S. Senator from Indiana. Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the 9th President of the United States. |

William McKinley
As the fifth president from Ohio in 28 years, William McKinley was sworn in on March 4, 1897. His inauguration was the first presidential inauguration to be filmed. McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio.
During his 11 years serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, McKinley represented four different Ohio districts due to redistricting efforts. Before becoming president, McKinley also served as Governor of Ohio for four years.

William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft was sworn in as the 27th President of the United States on March 4, 1909 – and was from right here in Cincinnati. Taft is the only president in history to become Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court after serving as President of the United States.

Warren G. Harding
Warren G. Harding was sworn in as the 29th President of the United States on March 4, 1921, although he served only two years in office due to his untimely death. He did, however, help establish the forbearer of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, Harding attended Ohio Central College. Before serving as President, Harding served as an Ohio State Senator, Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, and U.S. Senator for Ohio.
