New Year's Goals for Our Nation
With a new administration, a new Congress, and a new year, we as a nation have the opportunity to re-chart our way forward. Just as we set goals on an individual level each January, our country has the chance to reflect and recalibrate. With that in mind, here are a few of the top goals that I would set for our country this New Year:

- Get Washington's spending addiction under control.
- Restore Constitutional authority and roll back excessive regulations.
- We don't need more taxes - we need more common sense.
- National security must come first.
- Repeal and replace the dysfunctional Obamacare.
- America must keep our promises to those who served.

Did you know that currently, veterans who are appointed a VA fiduciary to help with benefits are automatically labeled as "mentally defective" in the VA system? This then places them on the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and can result in the loss of their Constitutional right to bear arms. This week, I joined my colleague, Rep. Conaway, in introducing a bill to fix that, while still retaining the appropriate safeguards for those who truly need assistance. Learn more here.

Additionally, this week, the House of Representatives passed commonsense legislation that will benefit all Americans. Below are a few highlights:

  • Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2017 (H.R. 555) -  Amateur radio operators have proven critical in helping with a crisis when traditional communication services have failed. This bill strikes a balance between community regulations and rights for operators, to ensure that amateur radios can function effectively.
Honoring our Heroes

At the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, I was privileged to present four American heroes from Brown County with medals earned while serving overseas. From left to right, these heroes were Petty Officer 3rd Class Daryl Smith, 1st Lieutenant Frank Mather Skidmore, Seaman 1st Class Richard Thomas Mallon, and Staff Sergeant Joseph P. Farrell.

Dan Rajaiah and Krutarth Jain of the Indian American Chamber of Commerce are two hard working members of the Cincinnati community - it was a pleasure sitting down with them to hear what they are doing to promote Greater Cincinnati internationally and strengthen collaboration locally.

Poll: Audit the Department of Defense
While I'm a strong supporter of fully resourcing national defense and properly equipping our troops, I also believe we have to fight waste and abuse to ensure defense dollars are going where they are most needed.

I want to know where you stand: Do you support comprehensive audits of the DoD? Take the poll.
