Combating the Opioid Epidemic

The drug epidemic has hit Ohio's Second District particularly hard, taking the lives of too many loved ones too soon, and too often.

But earlier this month, the House and the Senate voted to send the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) to the President's desk, a major victory in our fight to stop drug addiction in our communities. CARA was signed into law on Friday.

This vital legislation takes important steps not only to increase treatment resources for those battling addiction, but also to expand prevention efforts so no one else falls victim to this deadly epidemic.

Ultimately, the battle against drug addiction has to be waged at the state and local levels. But CARA will help enhance the tools and resources that our communities need for the fight.

The House of Representatives officially wrapped up legislative business for the summer on July 14, and Members headed back to their districts for the District Work Period. But before we adjourned, we passed several important bills. Here are just a few:
  • Iran Accountability Act (H.R. 5631) - This bill would reinstate tough sanctions on Iran and hold them accountable for continuing their ballistic missile program, supporting terrorism, and engaging in human rights abuses.
Preserving Conscience Protections
WATCH: I spoke on the House Floor in support of federal conscience protections.

Since the earliest days of our nation, conscience and freedom protections have been at the core of our system of government. But in recent years, these freedoms have come under attack on multiple fronts.

In just one example, California declared in 2014 that all health insurance plans in the state must cover abortions, a direct violation of federal law. But the Obama Administration has refused to enforce that law, forcing pro-life employers and healthcare providers in California to choose between violating their conscience or disobeying the state's mandate. Currently, victims of this discrimination cannot take their case to court; their only recourse is lodging a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Civil Rights.

With my strong support, the House recently passed a bill (S. 304) reaffirming federal conscience protections and allowing any discriminated individuals or entities to have their day in court.

A Better Way for America
Like many of you, House Republicans are not satisfied with the way our country is headed. Our national security has weakened, our foreign policy is misguided, our national debt has ballooned, Washington bureaucrats are more involved in Americans' day-to-day lives, and our economy is still struggling to recover from recession. That's why we're proposing a better way forward.
