Wenstrup Votes Against Democrats’ Radical Anti-Police Bill, Urges Bipartisan Approach to Police Reform

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) voted against H.R. 1280, a Democrat proposal to constrain American law enforcement officers by reducing their authority and equipment while increasing their on-the-job liability. As an alternative, Congressman Wenstrup has cosponsored the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere (JUSTICE) Act (H.R. 677), introduced in the House by Rep. Pete Stauber (MN-08), a former police lieutenant, and in the Senate by Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. “I’m proud to support our brave men and women in law enforcement – the overwhelming majority of whom are good, hardworking, selfless Americans. The tragic events of last year, however, only further highlighted that we need to make constructive reforms and provide our localities with the necessary resources and guidance to prevent more injustices from occurring. That’s why I’m a proud cosponsor of the JUSTICE Act, which takes a results-oriented approach. It strikes the right balance because it was crafted by a Senator who has dealt with racial injustices personally as well as a former police officer. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats used the filibuster to prevent the chamber from voting on the JUSTICE Act in the lead up to the 2020 election,” said Congressman Brad Wenstrup. “Now, House Democrats are emboldened to enact the same sweeping reforms they attempted last year, which would federalize power over our local law enforcement units, strip officers of reasonable protections while doing their job, and undermine police efforts to protect our communities. H.R. 1280 has been pushed through in a partisan manner each time it was brought to a vote. Instead, Democrats should work with Republicans to pass measured, bipartisan reforms that make us all safer.” |
