At the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, I was privileged to present four American heroes from Brown County with medals earned while serving overseas. 

I'd like to take a moment to introduce each of them to you, as we celebrate their service with deep gratitude.  

Meet Staff Sergeant Joseph P. Farrell



Staff Sergeant Joseph P. Farrell entered active duty on January 26, 1966. He was trained as a dental specialist and assigned to the 377th Military Hospital at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in the Republic of Vietnam.

On behalf of a grateful nation and the Congress of the United States, thank you. It was my honor to present Staff Sergeant Joseph P. Farrell (USAF) with the following medals:

- The Air Force Commendation Medal
- The Air Force Good Conduct Medal
- The National Defense Service Medal
- The Vietnam Service Medal
- The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal
- The Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Ribbon

Meet Seaman 1st Class Richard Thomas Mallon



Seaman 1st Class Mallon entered active duty on August 16, 1953, and was assigned to the USS Hancock and the Special Weapons Unit – Pacific Fleet, which at the time was instrumental to the Department of Defense's nuclear mission.

He served our country with honor and courage. It was my privilege to present Seaman 1st Class Richard Thomas Mallon (USN) with the following medals:

- The Navy Good Conduct Medal
- The National Defense Service Medal

Meet 1st Lieutenant Frank Mather Skidmore



The year was 1966. 1st Lieutenant Skidmore entered active duty on April 6 and accepted his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 222nd Combat Aviation Battalion. He served overseas in Vietnam one full year as a parachutist, participating in four major campaigns. Skidmore was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 25, 1968. 

Our nation is grateful for Frank’s dedicated and distinguished service. It was my honor to present 1st Lieutenant Frank Mather Skidmore (USA) with the following medals.

- The Bronze Star Medal
- The Air Medal
- The Good Conduct Medal
- The National Defense Service Medal
- The Vietnam Service Medal with Four Bronze Service Stars
- The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with 1960's device
- The Expert Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar
- The Expert Marksman Badge with Pistol Bar
- The Parachutist Badge
- The Pathfinder Badge

Meet Petty Officer 3rd Class Daryl Smith



It was his 18th birthday when Petty Officer 3rd Class Smith entered active duty on August 25, 1973. He was stationed aboard the USS Mars as a radioman. In April 1975, he participated in Operation Frequent Wind, in which U.S. troops helped to evacuate 7,000 American civilians and Vietnamese from the City of Saigon before the invasion of the North Vietnamese.

We can never repay you for your service, but we are grateful. Petty Officer 3rd Class Daryl Smith (USN) is an American hero, and it was my honor to present him with the following medals:

- The National Defense Service Medal
- The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
- The Vietnam Service Medal
- The Meritorious Unit Commendation 
- The Humanitarian Service Medal 
- The Sea Service Deployment Ribbon
- The Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon

Honoring these veterans with the medals they deserve is a small way we can take action to show gratitude for the men and women who wear this country's uniform and sacrifice so much to defend this special place we call home. Because not only do their sacrifices make this county great, they keep this country free.
