House Continues To Pass Legislation Funding Government Operations

Bill Funds Veterans’ Programs after Democrats Defeated It Earlier This Week

Today, the House of Representatives continued to pass legislation to fund and reopen the federal government. After being defeated by Democrat votes on Tuesday, the House was able to pass a bill to fully fund federal veterans’ programs as well as a bill to fund military Reserve and National Guard programs.

Representative Brad Wenstrup, an Army Reservist who served in Iraq, voted in support of both bills. He said he was “glad that the House could find bi-partisan agreement on supporting those who serve and have served. These are common sense steps to get our government open again.” Over thirty Democrat legislators joined all Republicans in passing the legislation

Rep. Wenstrup is also a cosponsor of H.R. 3232, the Pay Our Military Act, which would ensure that all military Reservists, Guard members, civilian employees and contractors would receive their pay during any future government shutdown.

So far, the Senate has not taken up any of the smaller, House-passed spending bills. Wenstrup, disappointed, said “I always thought veterans, reservists, and the guard were non-partisan issues that we could all support. I hope Harry Reid is able to pass this important legislation as soon as possible.” The House plans to continue passing smaller funding bills to open the federal government in coming days.
