WLWT News 5

GEORGETOWN, Ohio —U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup toured the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Brown County and examined what could be done to improve health care for the Tri-State’s veterans.

Wenstrup assured veterans at the Georgetown Veterans Home that the issue of veteran’s affairs would stay top of mind.

Veterans were able to asked Rep. Wenstrup questions about care and how returning vets will be received.

“When our military comes back at the end of this year from Afghanistan does the VA have contingency plans in place to receive them and get the priority of care,” Charlie Watson with Brown County Veterans Affairs asked.

Wenstrup discussed issues like wait times for veterans returning home, as well as those for veterans whose service ended years ago. He said the situation has been concerning for years, but now he believes congress will have the pull needed to do something about it.

As Rep. Wenstrup went through the questions, he assured those in attendance that the current spot light on problems with Veterans Affairs wasn’t just a political talking point, but instead a real bipartisan issue.

"What you're going to find is that congress, at least the House Veterans affairs committee, feels a responsibility to do right. I don't know if the administration will, and I hope that they do engage with us. But we have every intention of coming up with solutions for the whole VA system," Wenstrup said.

After Wenstup's talk at the veterans home, he also got a private tour of the Brown County VA facilities.
