When it comes to trade, Congress has the opportunity to restore trust, accountability, and transparency into the process through Trade Promotion Authority (known as TPA).With the proposed Trade Promotion Authority coming from the House of Representatives:
  1. Congress becomes an equal partner with the President in approving free trade proposals.
  2. Congress will establish the objectives of potential trade bills.
  3. Congress must give any trade deal an up-or-down vote.
  4. The text of any trade deal is required to be made public to the American people at least 60 days before the President can sign it.

"Americans feel left behind. Sluggish and uneven economic growth here at home and a retreat from American leadership around the world leaves us floundering in the 21st century.

This summer, Congress has the opportunity to renew American leadership in a way that strengthens alliances, counters global aggressors, grows our economy and creates jobs: Strengthened trade through Trade Promotion Authority.

We can restore American leadership throughout the world and strengthen our free-market economy by expanding trade with friends and allies, but I don't trust President Obama to do it unilaterally. Trade Promotion Authority should really be called Congressional Trade Authority, because it elevates the congressional role in the crafting and approval of any possible trade deal.
