Wenstrup honors city bicentennial

Portsmouth Daily Times

U.S. Congressman Brad Wenstrup was in Portsmouth Monday, and brought with him a resolution read on the floor of Congress honoring the city on it’s 200th birthday.

“I look at Portsmouth and it has been the gateway to America for a lot of people in a lot of ways,” Wenstrup said. “If you look at the developments over the years from the canal here to Lake Erie, they are impressive things, and what I see in this city, as I have gotten to know it since my time in Congress, is the ability to look not only to the past, the present, but also to the future. We’re seeing a lot of good things happening in the two and a half to three years I’ve been in congress.”

Wenstrup said he has seen the city of Portsmouth progress.

“I also know that there are a lot of great people here that are working hard to see that that continues and we seem to be getting more and more good news,” Wenstrup said. “I’m very thrilled about that.”

Wenstrup said one of the most fascinating aspects of the city of Portsmouth is the murals on the riverfront floodwall.

“It does talk about the past, the present and I think it’s indicative of the future as far as hard-working people here when it pays tribute to the tradition of the Hopewell Indians, the NFL Spartans, and famous sons like Branch Rickey and Roy Rogers and Al Oliver, along with community leaders.”

Wenstrup took the opportunity to highlight community events such as TOSRV bicycle tour and River Days.

“I just love the campus of Shawnee State and I spent time with the new president today,” Wenstrup said. “I really appreciate what they bring to the community. They have a lot more opportunity for this area as far as what I see as continuing education for people and just great opportunity for this region sitting there.”

Wenstrup said one of the beauties of this area is people who want to work are able to work and “ready to build America.”

Wenstrup continued – “Sometimes the best thing we can do for you in Washington is get out of your way and let you go ahead and continue to thrive.”
