Wenstrup Calls for Veto Override to Support Troops

Obama Vetoes Annual Defense Bill in Oval Office Photo Op

As President Barack Obama vetoed the nation’s annual defense bill Thursday afternoon in an Oval Office photo op, Congressman Brad Wenstrup, a veteran of the Iraq War, called for Congress to override the political veto, saying President Obama should not play political games with our troops.

“Serving in Iraq in 2005-2006, I know what it’s like to be deployed, wondering if the politicians back home have your back. But I always knew our Commander in Chief did. We can’t leave our military wondering now,” Wenstrup said. “This legislation provides a pay raise for our all-volunteer military and a plan for 2016 as we respond to threats posed around the world. This defense bill must become law. The readiness of our military is at stake.”

Wenstrup serves on the House Armed Services Committee, responsible for crafting the National Defense Authorization Act every year. The legislation has been passed into law on a bipartisan basis for over the last 50 years, and provides the nation’s military authorization to operate at all levels.
