Wenstrup Statement on the Passage of House Resolution Objecting to U.N.’s Anti-Israel Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives' passage of H.Res. 11, which objects to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 as an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace.

H.Res. 11 passed today, with Congressman Wenstrup's support.

“The U.N. Security Council Resolution is a blow to decades of U.S. efforts to facilitate a peaceful, two-state solution by encouraging direct bilateral negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. This administration’s recent refusal to veto the U.N.’s anti-Israel resolution is inexcusable, as well as directly contrary to the United States’ historic friendship and alliance with Israel. Today’s passage of H.Res. 11 was a necessary step towards rectifying that wrong.”

United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 was adopted on December 23, 2016, in a 14-0 vote. The U.S., which has veto power, abstained from voting.

Resolution 2334 addresses Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, stating that "the establishment by Israel of settlements ... has no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law." It orders Israel to cease such activity and fulfill its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
