GOP Doctors Caucus Co-Chairs Release Statement on Dobbs v. Jackson U.S. Supreme Court Decision

Washington, D.C. - Today, the co-chairs of the GOP Doctors Caucus released the following statements on the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case.

Statement from Rep. Brad Wenstrup, D.P.M. (R-OH):

“As a physician and a man of faith, I believe that life begins at conception. No matter how weak or small, all human life is deserving of basic dignity and respect. Roe vs. Wade was terrible jurisprudence. The power to pass laws resides with the people and their representatives, and I am pleased that today's Supreme Court decision has returned power to elected representatives. I am committed to caring for life from the womb to the grave for both the unborn and their mothers.”

Statement from Rep. Andy Harris M.D. (R-MD):

“Today, the Supreme Court got it right in overturning the incorrectly decided decades-old Roe opinion that treated young human life as not worthy of protection under our Constitution. As I have long said, human life is worthy of protection from conception until its natural end, and I am thankful that this ruling now affirms that. It is my hope that this decision will be respected on the legal merits upon which it was written.”

Statement from Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX):

“Before coming to Congress, I practiced medicine for nearly 30 years. During those years there were times when I would need to emergently intervene after a mother had suffered severe complications from an abortion, putting her life in danger. It was then my responsibility to save her life, which I did without hesitation. Today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court will save not only the lives of the unborn, but countless mothers. Having an abortion is not a simple fix or just another form of birth control as it has been advertised.

“The Supreme Court’s decision rightly returns the almost 50-year abortion debate back to the hands of elected officials instead of unelected judges. The United States is one of only seven countries, along with China and North Korea, that allows abortions after 20 weeks. It is time that legislators, not judges, decide the future of abortion policy in our country.  I have the privilege of seeing both sides of this argument as a doctor and a policy maker. The United States Constitution is very clear when it guarantees a right to life and now the Supreme Court has publicly recognized that fact. I believe it is time for Congress to enact policies that will build up communities."
