One voice broke the silence in the cafeteria.
Total Quality Logistics team member Preston Wade opened the company’s Veteran’s Day celebration luncheon with an a capella rendition of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” for an audience of more than 50 military veterans and active-duty reservists in attendance Nov. 11 at TQL headquarters. Wade served in the United States Army from 1988 to 1996, beginning his career in the medical corps before becoming an Army Ranger. He is one of more than 100 Cincinnati-based TQL employees with military experience. U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-2nd District)– himself a Bronze Star recipient and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army – addressed the TQL service men and women before working the room, shaking hands and thanking each of them individually. “The wars of the past were a lot different than the ones our parents and grandparents fought,” Wenstrup said. “We knew who the enemy was and we knew when the wars were over. You younger vets have had a very different experience. But ultimately, our mission is the same. “We live in the greatest nation the world has ever seen. We subjugate no one and we strive for freedom all around the world. “And for all of you served in peacetime, you know there would be no peace without you. We’re grateful for what you’ve done, too.” Wenstrup said military service is a rare calling. “Only 1 percent of Americans have served,” he said. “You’re an elite group. Think of what those veterans have done for this country. You come from a background of hard work, discipline and sacrifice. You understand teamwork and reaching objectives.” TQL executive vice president Kerry Byrne agreed. “We hire vets and members of the National Guard because they possess the skills and values we are looking for – an outstanding work ethic, the ability to learn new skills quickly, and the tenacity for creating success in any situation,” he said. “We’re known for celebrating a lot of accomplishments here, but it’s especially important for us to celebrate the men and women in our company who served the country.” TQL consistently earns recognition for its work with veterans, most recently receiving the Center of America Award for Outstanding Commitment and Leadership Oct. 23 during a ceremony at The Hall of Flags in Washington, D.C.
