Today Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-2), a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, voted in favor of H.R. 5351, a bill sponsored by Congresswoman Jackie Walorski that would prohibit all detainee transfers from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. H.R. 5351, which passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 244-174, would halt all detainee transfers from Guantanamo Bay until January 1, 2017, or until the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act is signed into law. Congressman Wenstrup is a cosponsor of the legislation. “Why does the Administration put politics over the security of our nation?” said Wenstrup. “In the latest round of releases, the President just transferred 15 dangerous detainees to the United Arab Emirates. Why has he not put forth a comprehensive detention and trial strategy for these dangerous individuals instead? With the passage of H.R. 5351, the people’s House is sending a strong and clear message that our national security and the lives of Americans are most important.” The full text and summary of H.R. 5351 can be found here.
