Friend,
This week, the House of Representatives is voting on some strong, bipartisan bills that are aimed at bettering the lives of Americans across the country, and giving everyone more opportunities to achieve their goals. Take a look:
Combating the opioid epidemic:
Too often, due to the opioid epidemic or other circumstances, families are broken and torn apart, which can greatly affect the growth and development of children. The House is addressing this problem by passing H.R. 2834, to give local communities more tools to address the impacts of substance abuse and H.R. 2857, which will allow children to remain with a parent who is in a residential-based family substance facility.
Updating the foster care system:
We're also considering legislation to ensure that our children's well-being is the number one priority of our country's foster care system:
- Reducing the time it takes to place foster children across state lines with a family member. (Read H.R. 2742.)
- Reinforcing flexibility in foster care licensing to allow more children to be with their relatives. (Read H.R. 2866.)
- Updating the Chafee Foster Care program to help older foster youth make the transition to adulthood. (Read H.R. 2847.)
Getting the facts about Russia:
On Wednesday, I'm in back-to-back committee hearings, including a House Intelligence Committee hearing on its continued Russia investigation, and meetings with different groups from Ohio's Second District. To stay updated, follow me on Instagram live.
Educating + equipping tomorrow's workforce
One of the most important aspects of creating long-term economic growth is equipping the next generation to become a skilled and successful workforce. Take a look at the House bill to do just that, here.
The House will also vote on the Accelerating Individuals into the Workforce Act, continuing our efforts to reform our nation's welfare system based on four key principles:
- Expect those who can work to work in exchange for benefits.
- Get incentives right.
- Focus on results of welfare programs.
- Improve program integrity to preserve welfare benefits for those most in need.
