North Korea, Russia, and Iran – these are three regimes that continue to threaten their neighbors and work to undermine U.S. national security and democracy. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- North Korea: Just this month, the Kim Jong Un regime conducted its first successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile which could reach Alaska if on the right trajectory, according to experts.
- Russia: Under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, Russia has engaged in a series of aggressive actions that threaten global peace and security, including the use of espionage and cyber capabilities in an effort to undermine our election system.
- Iran: A designated State Sponsor of Terrorism, Iran continues to fund terrorist activity and disrupt Middle East stability by supporting Syria’s murderous Assad regime and fueling the civil war in Yemen.
Enough is enough. Today, I voted “yes” as the House passed the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (
H.R. 3364) to implement tougher sanctions against these hostile regimes for their continued efforts to undermine democracy, peace, and human rights.
There’s no silver bullet in these situations, but it’s critical that we utilize both economic and diplomatic tools to hold countries accountable when they act repeatedly and aggressively against our interest and our security.
