Rep. Wenstrup Statement on the House Speaker
Washington, October 5, 2023
Kevin McCarthy served our Conference and our cause admirably, from winning back the majority for the American people to negotiating the most significant deficit reduction plan in history, and we all owe him thanks. Unfortunately, eight Republicans teamed up with every Democrat to vacate the Speakership, and now House Republicans must move deliberately and with cohesion to elect a proven leader who will champion the conservative agenda Americans sent us here to enact. House Republicans remain the only check on the Biden White House and Democrat Senate.
Ongoing House investigations to hold the Biden Administration accountable are now essentially stopped until a new Speaker is selected, including an impeachment inquiry and investigations into the origins of COVID and the government’s pandemic response. As Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, I refuse to see these important investigations, that we are finally conducting, grind to an indefinite halt.
