Wenstrup Continues Pushback Against Common Core

Nationalized Education Standards Coming Under Intense Scrutiny

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Monday, Congressman Brad Wenstrup and five other Ohio congressmen sent a joint letter to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, expressing concerns about the rushed and expensive implementation of Common Core. Common Core is the federal education initiative being adopted by approximately forty five states, including Ohio. The letter insists that local parents, teachers, and state officials know what is best for their school districts, not federal bureaucrats.

“I fear that these national Common Core standards are trying to force a one-size-fits-all solution on uniquely different states,” Wenstrup said. “Ohio isn’t the same as Hawaii, or Texas, or New York. We can’t be rushing to push our children into mediocrity; it’s not fair to them.”

This comes the same day Secretary Duncan walked back remarks disparaging concerned mothers for questioning Common Core’s implementation. This is not the first time Wenstrup questioned the Common Core initiative: in April, he expressed concerns about the standards’ implementation and federal data collection policies on every student, and in July, voted for H.R. 5, the Student Success Act, which would prohibit federal officials from compelling states like Ohio to adopt Common Core standards.
