Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Committee released the text of a short-term continuing resolution (CR) that would fund government operations until December 9. If enacted, the bill would provide funding allowing decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) work at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant to continue at the current pace, without job losses or delays. In response, U.S. Congressman Brad Wenstrup issued the following statement:

“I’m glad that the Senate’s short-term spending bill provides the flexibility needed to avoid layoffs or work stoppages at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, and I thank Senator Portman for his hard work on this issue. This is an important step towards holding the federal government to its promise to the Piketon community, but it is just the beginning. I will continue working with the Ohio delegation and House leadership to ensure this provision is enacted into law, and that D&D operations receive the long-term funding they need to properly clean up and revitalize the Piketon site.”

Congressman Bill Johnson added: “While we continue to work towards a long-term funding solution, this short-term funding is important to ensuring vital operations will continue and layoffs are avoided. The people of the Piketon community want nothing more than for this site to be readied for reindustrialization, and I look forward to continue working with Senator Portman, Congressman Wenstrup, and the rest of the Ohio delegation, to make that a reality.”
